Assignment #1 J Drum

In the article Radical in the White House Thomas L. Friedman is writing to the middle and upper class businessmen since it was released in the New York Times. This article was written to inform the public of the need for radical reform in the United States. It is also pointing out that this is the perfect opportunity given Obama's recent election. Freidman uses this piece to gain support for reform from the public by pointing out the oppurtunities Obama has to make changes. He does this because he understands that public support is necessary.
Fridman's argument in this article is one of how in the past presidents have used political breakthroughs, foriegn attacks, and inner disputes to bring forth radical changes in the United States to help keep the country going. He also gives examples of how presidents have squandered these oppurtunities and led the country into a decline.
