This article was written by Thomas L. Friedman in the New York Times on January 21, 2009. This article is directed to the American people. I believe it is written to stir a fire in people of all nationalities and genders just as Oboma’s inauguration speech was ment to do.
The purpose of this article is to reach out and remind the American people that this election is not about fame and glamour but reality. The reality of a man that is going to be leading us and making decisions for the present day and for our next generations.
The author argues that we have made many mistakes in our past. With the mistakes this country has made, President Oboma is able to look back at history and work hard not to repeat these same mistakes. He is also able to look back and see how many of our former Presidents handled national crisis such as The Great Depression, Civil Rights Movment and others as the author stated.
In conclusion there is no daubt that this is a new season and new time for Change. The President has a lot on his plate and the American people are going to hold the President accountable- more than ever. They want hope and change therefore failure is not an option.

Assignment #1 tbeasley
The article written by Thomas L. Friedman in the New York Times was written to express the author's views on Obama's presidency and to state that we as a country do need what was so eloquently promised by our Nation's first black president...CHANGE; not just small changes, but dramatic significant changes to our government and bureaucracy. The author seems to believe that a dramatic change in our nation's values, practices and government regulations is absolutely essential if our Nation is to pull out of the current economic situation and move forward into growth and prosperity.
The intended audience for this article seems to be America as a whole, but also those doubters of the new President. The author seems to be trying to entice them to believe that one man alone can bring change to our country, if he could indeed make good on all his campaign promises, if he can in fact make "radical departure from business as usual, led by Washington".
The whole of America needs to realize however, that one man alone did not get America into "the very deep holes" it currently finds itself in, and one man alone cannot dig America out of them.

Assignment # 1 S. Suarez
Shortly after reading the article in the New York Times by Thomas L. Friedman, I finally realized how far we have come as a nation over the last 100 years. Our society is now changing as we have elected the first african american as the president of the united states of america, something that only sixty years before many people would have thought to be an impossible task. This article was written toward the american people in order for them to know how far we have come as a nation and how hard we have the work now more then ever in order to help our newly elected president fix many of the challenging issues that now awaits us such as health care, unemployment, our oil crisis, and the economy.
The argument the author makes is the fact that during times of great crisis the american people look towards their leader in order to help them through the problem. It is during these times of crisis that the author says "presidents can do big things". President obama now has a chance to do many great things. He first has to fix many of the problems that were left behind by our last president, but he also has the opportunity to guide our nation into a new era of peace and prosperity by inacting new laws and bills that can help lead the american people towards a bighter future. This is his chance to make a difference, as the author says "Obama will now have to swing for the fences". but only time will tell how many fences he will swing towards during his term.
In conclusion, President obama has a huge chance that not many presidents get in order to help reshape our country towards a better future and as the article states this is his chance to be "Radical" and make radical descisions for the better. But we can't just put all the burden on our president. We the american people also have to put in our part in order for us to get out of the deep holes we are in. If we all come together as a nation im sure we can all have a future to look foward to. This is the time for our president and our country to start making the change we need for the better.

Assignment #1 A. Reid
The author and article have a underlining motive that is being expressed in many ways and to a select number of people in America. First I think the author is a well researched middle age man that feels the need to express his thoughts on the recent events Obama’s Inauguration and to warn America of the implications of such strong words during Obama’s Inauguration Speech. The author was writing this article for those of recent voting age to mid-thirties. I feel that he is speaking to these ages to excite them of the changes that could happen during Obama’s time when he says:
"We can’t thrive as a country any longer by coasting on our reputation, by postponing solutions to every big problem that might involve some pain and by telling ourselves that dramatic new initiatives — like a gasoline tax, national health care or banking reform — are too hard or “off the table.”"
This excitement is for those of the younger crowd to let them have some hope that when they get out of school that they can go and find a job and be able to not financially struggle. He is also speaking to the older crowd that “we” can come out of this slump and things can change for the better. The author tells of past presidents that have been great leaders by what they did during America’s struggling times.
"In the 1930s, the Great Depression enabled Franklin Roosevelt to launch the New Deal and redefine the role of the federal government…These presidencies did more than enact new laws and programs, they rewrote the social contract, and redefined what it means to be a citizen."
Though with these exciting times comes a chance to blunder and not be as good as a leader as several say Obama will be. The author warns that Obama needs to be carful on how he goes about making these changes and tells the audience to be patient because it could longer than some may want to wait. The author is basically arguing that there si a chance for a great leader to be had and for people to be excited but also to be sure to contain the excitement and ride out the storm. Do not think that things will change over night.

Assignment #1 E. Lear
In the article by Thomas L. Friedman he is writing about the history that was made when Obama took office has our new president. He was look back at the history of America to see how far we have came. From the slavery era to Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speak. He was also looking at the history of the government and of the country. We have came a long way and still have a long ways to go.
The article was from the New York Times it was written this month after Obama was up into office. It was written to give Americans an understanding of the history in the making and past history. Many people in this day and time have forgot what happened in the U.S. Many think its the past and nothing else but in this article it's much more it is life and freedom. History is what make the U.S. what it is to help and guide us through the struggle that are here and whats to come. The target audience would be everyone in America. Like I said above to give them the history of what this country went thought to get this far in it's life.
I would say the argument in this article is for the president to do what he said he would do. But like many for the president before him stop saying your going to do it and do it. Like Obama said in the beginning of his election we need the CHANGE. We need to start over and have a new beginning to get own country back in order and on the right path and in the right direction.

Assignment #1 (S. Layman)
This article was written by Thomas L. Friedman, for the New York Times, Jan 21,2009. His article was written directed toward America and the World. For us to open our eyes to the great changes this country is going through and needs to go through. He argues that our country has finally made it to a point where an African American can become president. That change is happening (for the better). He hopes that Obama can fix all the problems that Bush made and left behind.
The one thing that I feel wasnt really touched by this article is the fact the the country itself needs to help in making the change. It is a proud day when we have an African American President in this country. Not to mention the fact that one of his running mates was a woman. The country is changing to one of better equality for everyone. While it will take time to fix all the problems that this country has faced, we the people of the United States need to help Obama fix the problems on the past. We alone cannot allow him to carry the burden of what has happened. We look to him to lead and to help but we must realize that we have to help him make these changes and fix this country.

Assignment#1 Christopher S. Carolina
It is now more obvious than ever that the United States of America is knocking at the front door of change. After 12 o’clock pm on January 20th 2009 the first African American president was elected and sworn in to office. His name was Barack Hussein Obama. Shortly after reading the article in the New York Times by Thomas L. Friedman, Radical in the White House it became clear to me how much of an impact this election will have on the American population as a whole, and not just African Americans. Thomas Friedman’s message of a radical in the white house is in essence the only solution to the numerous issues left for Barack Obama by our former president, George W. Bush and the Bush Administration.
As a result there exists a declining economy, the unbelievable rates of unemployment, and a banking system surrounded by controversy. America can’t afford another presidential office who isn’t prepared to face the questions of the American people. We are in need of a president who won’t steer from the difficult decisions. A president who will implement the policies that are congruent with the opinions of the American people.
Now is the time for change. Change in our government and economic policies such as health care, job security, employment, and of course the housing market. Change in our financial systems, and bringing an end to our armed services efforts in the Middle East. The point that Friedman was trying to relay to the readers of his article is that it comes a time where your back is against the wall and that forces you to put it all on the line. Well, right now America is against the wall and hopefully President Barack Obama and his administration will produce solutions. As Friedman puts it, the President needs to place everything on the table.
Barack Obama is standing on the foundation of the American people with support across the board that he will, along with his presidential cabinet create resolutions to the predicaments that we have dug ourselves into in America. The stage is set for a dramatic sequence of events to take place in the times ahead. Agreeing with Thomas Friedman my most fervent prayer is that God will allow a change that will progress the United States. A change that doesn't stop with the election of the first African American President but starts from the 20th day of January 2009.

Assignement 1 B Brakefield
This article was written by Thomas L. Friedman in the New York Times on January 21, 2009. This item was written kinda as an introduction to Obama's presidence, and his opinon on the governement. Friedman is showing how far this country as come from the Great Depression to Martin Luther King Jr. "I have a Dream" speech, and now a black President. The author is also acknowledging how President Bush messed up the economy and now Obama is supposibly going to fix everything.
I think this artcile was directed to really everyone. Mainly to democrats and people who voted for Obama though, and to who ever; which should be everyone, who wants to help this country and our economic problem. The author is arguring that its time for a change in America. And supposibly Barack Obama is going to do it. Fridman argues that Bush put this country in a very deep whole and he hopes Obama swings for the fence and hopes he doesn't forget to run the bases. In my opinon only God can save this country.
